The cockpit was strait from the box.

Some are flown at airshows, whilst roughly equal numbers are maintained in ground-runnable condition at various locations, many of these being in the United Kingdom. Many years ago, I built the earlier Airfix kit of the JP5, and it would be interesting to dig that out from my storage unit to see how that has weathered the years (and to see how our modelling techniques and materials have changed since I built that in the late 1980s!

Hunting Percival demonstrator landing after its display to the Farnborough crowds in 1954. )Last Christmas, my friend said to me “You can build all these complex kits really well – but how would you do with a starter kit?” . The first flight of the prototype Jet Provost T.1 took place 26 June 1954. During the 1950s, the Provost was developed for the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a replacement for the Percival Prentice. But the instructions for the masks showed the Airfix part numbers for the different canopies in the opposite order to the Airfix instruction sheet, and in the process I managed to mask up the wrong canopy. The thought that has gone into the design is remarkanble; tyres are moulded flat, to represent the weight of the aircraft, and the undercarriage is so designed that it is not possible to put the wheels on with the flat in the wrong place. Then it was on to the painting. In addition to the multiple RAF orders, the Jet Provost, sometimes with light armament, was exported to many air forces worldwide.

Airfix had issued many years a kit of the Jet Provost T.3 kit #01029. It’s a good choice of Airfix’s for inclusion in their starter sets; I’m pleased to say that I have another put away safe in the stash, which I intend to finish in a Light Aircraft Grey  with Dayglo stripes scheme. 2 Flying Training School at The later T4 was fitted with the more powerful Viper A.S.V.

As this is a starter kit, Airfix selected a simple colour scheme, one of the This was a project which brought a smile to my face; as I said, it was a pleasure to build.

The first one is very old T.3 (judging from the wing bulge, correct mark might be T.2) and the second one is T.5. The existing T.1 design was developed and Hunting Percival made several improvements to the airframe. It was a dangerous job, Departures from the RIAT / Air Tattoo at Fairford airbase is visited by a large group of international spotters. The desig…

In early 1951, Hunting Percival began work on the design studies that would ultimately lead to the Jet Provost.During the early design process, a series of increasingly frequent liaisons with On 19 February 1955, the first of ten pre-production aircraft, designated as the As a result of the results and responses produced from the trials performed using the pre-production aircraft, Hunting Percival proceeded to develop and incorporate several different improvements upon the design. It remained in service until mid-1966, when it was ferried to RAF Shawbury and put into long-term store with 27MU.In early 1973 following the closure of 27MU, XM479 was moved to RAF Kemble for a further period of storage, this time with 5MU, where it remained for the next three years. On 9th February 1976, XM479 was ferried to Warton airfield in Lancashire, for conversion to T.3A status. Deliveries of the first production version, the T.3, began in 1958 and a total of 201 were delivered to the RAF by 1962. It was posted to the RAF College, Cranwell, and was given the identity '32'. It was later developed into the T.5 in 1967, which employed cabin pressurisation.XN468 started life as a T.3 but was used as one of three development aircraft for the Viper 201 engine. (These caused my only problem with the kit; Airfix provide two canopies, one slightly larger than the other so that it can be displayed with the canopy open, and it was that one I intended to use. Hunting Percival developed the Jet Provost from the piston-engined Percival Provost basic trainer.

The RAF Lancasters flew the night missions in the second World War to Germany. Jet Provosts were exported to several countries especially in the Persian Gulf region.
