The drums become a feel through technique. We will conclude our session on music theory next time by discussing pitch, tempo and key. While this bit of information is unlikely going to be of any use to you for DJ purposes, if you are ever unsure whether a track has 4 beats in a bar, do a quick google search for the time signature of the track. As an exercise play a dance track of yours and count the beats. Nice beat at the beginning of the video!! Understanding a time signature is basic and the what you cover this isn’t very clear or accurate. I’ve been taking lessons for the last several weeks, but this is the one concept I struggle with the most.I never knew how to count bars, or anything about phrases, time signatures, I just always kept my MPC on time signature of 4/4 cuz it sounded right.. I’m glad I saw your video! Love watching your vids! kudos. Thanks. You say that counting beats is one of the most important things to learn. Well done! This is great.

Beats, bars, phrases, and parts of a typical dance track explained. To 8 tho why couldnt you have stopped at 4Can you please do a tutorial of ace hood lord knows for an exampleI just wanted to thank you much for making this video on how to better understand beats bars and phases I really appreciate it alot .I’m so very bad at it but you made it very easy for me to understand it especially the 32 countThank You-I know it, trying to explain to my grandson-superior explanationNice video, very easy to understand as well if you’re someone who doesn’t know anything about music. Thanks for such a great video… I’ve just bought my pioneer dj controller, ive been struggling a bit on mixing. You’ve ended my four day long hunt!

!Thank you for this wonderful lesson. Just like beats are grouped into bars, the bars themselves are grouped into phrases. Though most DJs have a good sense of rhythm, few I’ve seen have had or have taken the opportunity to learn any formal rhythm theory.

A lot of electronic music consists of 8 bars per phrase, so in this instance that makes 32 beats per phrase.

Most phrases will be 4 bars or 8 bars and you should just listen to your music and count the bars to see how many bars the music stays the same before you notice a musical change. Fuck, these so called djs now a days are fucking simple.

Thanks mate!!!!

The next time length you need to grasp are bars, and the one after that is phrases. Awesome explanations. And…I’ve never commented on any videos before. The above gives you a detailed flavour and insight into the breakdown of an electronic track.

If you’ve got this far in the article then well done! After I set up my first set of turntables and a mixer, I didn’t really know much about bars and phrases.

I really appreciate it.So well explained. ♥ djDD Pz Outthanks so much to take a bit of your time to teach the world !thanks so much to take a bit of your time to teach the world !I am a guitar player and was searching for this.

I would love it if you made a follow up video to this with various examples of hip hop songs, from simple to complex/rich, and telling us what the count is.Thank you, just came across your tutorial. Thank you so much ! Earlier I mentioned that when something changes in a track, it happens on the 1st beat of the bar. This would equate to 420 beats.Well, it’s important because musicians and producers use this method of beat counting to identify where the beats and bars within a piece of music are located, then they place important musical elements and make musical changes at those locations. So if for example I got a track playing and I want to mix in a second track with an intro phrase of 8 bars. Taught by experienced and accredited tutors in studios utilising only top of the range equipment such as Pioneer CDJ 2000nxs2 and DJM900nxs2. Generally speaking each section and phrase within it can be identified as other layers for instruments or sound being introduced. In this example, let’s look at how an electronic music track is structured from start to finish, looking at the breakdown of each section, beats and phrase. After the drop, the chorus and verse are then repeated to some extent followed by an outro.

THANK YOU! Once this starts to make sense you will start to create a natural understanding of logical mix moments in a song. One thing you need to remember: knowing how to count music is essential, but make sure that you know your music!Support DJ TLM TV with PayPalMe: http://goo.gl/WKIBepFor questions and requests, please contact djtlmtv@djtlm.comFor collaboration/business inquiries, please contact info@djtlm.comThat video just changed my wholeeee concept.
