Still a classic in many ways. Indeed, Peterson calls this small volume, writing which has characterized “everything I’ve written since.” This idea is important because through this book one can see Peterson’s heart for “men and women who believingly follow Jesus” to be “best guided and energized by a fusion of Scripture and prayer.” Everything Peterson has written in this book is just that, a lifelong guide for discipleship.Good writing and a few great quotes. Tucked away in the Hebrew Psalter, Peterson discovered "an old dog-eared songbook," the Songs of Ascents that were sung by pilgrims on their way up to worship in Jerusalem.

Of course Peterson cannot perfectly convey what is necessary for the Christian life, but he does attempt the task. Peterson's combination of passion and insight match the psalmists'. This is a very reflective book, so don't be in a hurry, relax and digest it slowly. I was a little surprised to find out Peterson took this idea from a Friedrich Nietzsche quote, who was by no means a Christian. Singing the fifteen psalms is a way both to express the amazing grace and to quiet the anxious fears.
