The front garden is north of and back garden is south of the house. We live in a new build, so it's partially because if the level of insulation, but I can't emphasise enough how unbearable it can be when it's really sunny. Mines north facing. is in shade from the 6ft fence nearly all day. Sure the front is sunnier for longer but the bottom of my garden gets plenty of sun and I have some great fruit bushes there that don't seem bothered I was going to suggest popping around there and checking garden in the evening or daytime. We have a north facing garden, about 65ft and it's hugely sunny.

All in all, totally depends on depth.I have just moved from a south facing garden to a north facing garden (both gardens around 100 feet long) and was concerned about this aspect. It happens to be NF and I dont wish for.more sunlight. If its deeper than the shadow them having a bit of shade is nice. Everything else was perfect and there has to be a compromise somewhere! I think it depends on the size of your garden and what else surrounds it. it was pretty gloomy. I'd guess that will depend on the height of the surrounding buildings and trees. There are various paved areas so we are not restricted to sitting in the shady bit. However, it does partly depend on how the light hits. We have a double whammy at the back because the neighbours' trees on either side shade the garden more and suck the moisture out of the soil.

We did get a patio built though at the end of the garden to ensure we get a sunny spot to sit in the evening or during warm days in October or the spring.We have a North facing garden and still get a decent amount of sunshine - the main issue for us is the bedrooms and living room at the front are ridiculously warm when it's hot outside because they face south. If we were buying now then the preference would be for the garden to face south/south west - I probably wouldn't even go and see a house with a north facing garden.

It was a compromise when we bought the house. It isn't the summer so much as the winter sun in the garden which is so welcome. My house was marketed as north facing garden.

It has been a real battle to grow anything in the borders close to the house - but then I'm not a very good gardener! And if it also totally surrounded and overlooked by other similarly high houses that would be very oppressive, and in almost constant shade.I have a north facing garden- it was my one compromise on an otherwise perfect house. We now spend more time outside than in the south facing garden and the sun is in the garden all day, except right by the back of the house and the house remains cool. Our current house is the other way around and I spend as little time as possible in the back yard, on a hot sunny day, because it's intolerable.We have a NE facing garden, about 40 feet deep. I have a north facing garden and have no real problems. We actually didn't buy a house last year because it was otherwise lovely but north-facing, and basically just mud. I am enjoying the planting challenge - latest mix of clematis & ferns are lovely. I was worried when we moved in, but it's totally fine. I had a house with a north ish facing garden and the grass didn't grow. Growing veg is a bit of a challenge & I end up growing tomatoes in the front. There are no fences or boundary walls separating the neighbouring houses.. so it cant be that private.. A small portion of the garden gets sun light according to the current owners..Sounds similarly positioned to my house, although I have a much smaller north facing back garden (about 15 ft).
