Residency Program We train residents to be able to be anything they want to be in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery. In addition, one resident per year has the opportunity to spend a year doing laboratory research after the PGY-2 year.Fellowships in hand surgery, sports medicine, spine, joint and orthopaedic trauma offer specialized training and intensive clinical and research experience.Trauma clerkships are available for students interested in spending four weeks with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s busy trauma service at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center.Fourth year medical students interested in doing a sub-internship/clerkship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery spend 2 weeks on one of the adult elective services at Keck Hospital of USC and 2 weeks on the trauma or hand services at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center. The fellow works with faculty and residents in busy clinics and operating rooms, gaining expertise in orthopaedic trauma fundementals, including nonoperative management, AO principles, medullary nailing and complex articular fractures.At Keck Hospital, the fellow will gain experience in a tertiary referral setting with exposure to the treatment of nonunions, malunions, osteomyelitis and the practice of limb lengthening/deformity correction.
Fellows are expected to engage in clinical and/or basic science research and will be responsible for a thesis at the end of the fellowship.The fellowship is open to board-eligible orthopaedic or general surgeons.
