Young Food Ambassadors from across the country joined Dame Emma Thompson at Westminster to call for urgent political action on child food insecurity.An estimated 4.1 million children live in poverty in the UK, with an estimated 2.5 million living in food insecure households that struggle to earn enough income to pay for a healthy diet all year round. The Children’s Future Food Inquiry sought the views of children and young people living in poverty across the UK over 12 months. Submissions may come from children, teachers, healthcare professionals, parents, older siblings, carers or anyone at all who has known or observed children who don’t have easy access to nutritious diets. The Inquiry was co-ordinated by the Food Foundation and led by the All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) on School Food, and Hunger and Food Poverty. An estimated 4.1 million children are living in poverty in the UK, but we know almost nothing about how many of these children experience food insecurity (the inability to acquire or consume an adequate quality or sufficient quantity of food in socially acceptable ways, or the uncertainty that one will be able to do so). The children’s future food inquiry has for the past year listened to young people tell us about their experiences of food insecurity. The result is the children’s #Right2Food charter, which was launched two weeks ago in Westminster with Dame Emma Thompson, who has done a fantastic job as the inquiry’s ambassador. The Children’s Future Food Inquiry’s final report and young people’s #Right2Food Charter were published on April 25th 2019. The report highlights how school holiday hunger can heighten the issue.
